Dr Sara Kindon, School of Geography Environment and Earth Sciences, programme Director of Geography, along with Dr Angela Joe, School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, Dr Mary Roberts and Laila Faisal of Student Learning Support form the team that has been recognised for its 2012 public contribution. Their work is supported by the wider VUW Network to Support Refugee-Background Students which, since its establishment in 2007, has built a number of researchled support services and resources at Victoria.

From a small grant in 2011, the team produced the flagship publication Opening Doors – Support and Services for Refugee-Background Students at Victoria. The publication has been supplied to educators, community organisations, government agencies and refugee background students across New Zealand. The team has also displayed leadership nationally: sharing their expertise on refugee-background students’ learning needs with government officials, fellow academics and teachers through working groups, discussion documents and conference presentations.
