After defending his PhD thesis, Joe McCarter has recently arrived at Colorado State University to start a position as postdoctoral fellow (as part of the Human Dimensions of Natural Resources Department in the Warner College of Natural Resources) for the year - focussing on the biogeography of biocultural diversity.

"So far, I'm loving the US - the academic environment is stimulating, and it is amazing to be part of such a large and diverse body of practitioners and academics where the potential for connections and collaborations is vast. It has been especially interesting to be situated in a very different ecosystem (arid, fire-adapted) with different issues (water allocation, fire management) than in New Zealand, and to note how some discussions (such as indigenous resource management) are at very different stages to those back home. The town, too, is great - close to the rocky mountains (50+ peaks over 14,000 ft), not to mention the 10 or so craft breweries", says Joe.

All in all, although Jo misses Victorica University and Wellington, Joe is looking forward to seeing how the next year progresses.  We wish him all the best for the coming year.
