Previous winners are eligible to receive the award on subsequent occasions if they are judged to meet the criteria for the award.

Information

This prize was established by a private donor, via the University of Wellington Foundation in 2018, to recognise excellence in cello performance by postgraduate students at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University of Wellington.

The prize is awarded to a cello student demonstrating excellence in cello performance and with career potential. Where no suitable recipient is identified in a given year, the available funds can, at the discretion of the decision-makers, be rolled over to the next academic year.

Prize funds are to assist the student with fees or a project undertaken during their studies, or equipment directly related to their studies, for example a bow, or a cello.

The award is made through an endowment and so the number of awards made each year will be dependent on the funds available. There will be at least one award per year when there are suitable candidates.

The recipient will be selected by the Head of Cello and Head of Strings with Director approval, based on a final recital for current students or an audition for incoming students.

Recipients are required to write a letter of thanks to the donor within a month of receiving this award. The recipient will be expected to demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of the New Zealand School of Music.

A condition of the award is that the winner will perform in a concert, to which the donor will be invited.
