Eligibility

This prize is awarded to the best student studying a European language (other than French).

Information

This prize arises from a bequest of £1,000 in 1953 under the will of the late Siegfried Eichelbaum, one of the early graduates of the Victoria University of Wellington and a member of the Council from 1923 until the time of his death.

Students cannot receive the Eichelbaum and the Von Zedlitz Prizes in the same year.

The prize is offered annually and is awarded to the best student in any European language (other than French) taught at Victoria University of Wellington. The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School.

The value of the prize in any year is determined after consideration of the income from the fund and the number of prize winners. If in any year the whole of the income from the fund is not expended, the balance may be added to the capital fund.

Recipients are encouraged to spend part of the prize money on a book, or books.

Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded appropriately.
