The University and the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī (NZSM) have partnered with Chamber Music New Zealand (CMNZ) to sponsor the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) Chamber Music contest. This competition for secondary school students is the largest and oldest music contest in New Zealand and showcases young talent from around the country.

This partnership further strengthens the ongoing relationship between NZSM and CMNZ. Over the last two yearsthis relationship has seen NZSM support residencies alongside CMNZ, including the 2017 Bach Cantata residency in Nelson, which Maestro Masaaki Suzuki attended. This residency also included performances from students and representatives from the Juilliard School of Music, New York, one of the world’s most prestigious music schools. In 2019, NZSM helped CMNZ to support the Septura Residency (for brass instruments) in Nelson, and the CMNZ hosted a national concert tour with world renowned violist Jennifer Stumm and NZSM’s Te Kōkī Trio (Jian Liu, Martin Riseley, and Inbal Megiddo).

The NZCT Chamber Music contest is seen as a facilitator in encouraging young musicians into further education and launching their careers.

“The contest is a vital fixture in the calendars of this country’s young Classical musicians and is a wonderful celebration of musical talent and the communities which support it across New Zealand. The NZSM is delighted to again be collaborating with CMNZ on another excellent educational project,” says  NZSM Deputy Director Dr Dugal McKinnon.
