History and purpose

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage Māori undergraduate students to study in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington offers scholarships/internships to those Māori students about to begin their third-year undergraduate studies. These scholarships/internships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand Māori students.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants must be intending to study full time at 300 level in either a BSc COMP, DATA, STAT, BE (Hons) in SWEN in AI specialisation at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must have completed 3 of the following courses (COMP102, 112, 132, 103, 261, DATA 101, 201, 202, STAT 292, MATH 177) at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be of Māori descent.

Selection criteria

  • Applicants are expected to have achieved a minimum B+ grade average (GPA 6.0) at 200 level. Recipients will be based on academic merit of Māori students.
  • These scholarships are open to excellent students enrolled at 200 level in BSc in DATA and COMP and SWEN with an AI Specialisation at Victoria University of Wellington.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Selection process

Decisions will be made by the (Centre for) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Executive Committee.

The scholarship will be paid as a contribution towards accommodation or tuition fees.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  1. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  1. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  1. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  1. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  1. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  1. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
