School of Science in Society Undergraduate Scholarship: Science Communication
History and purpose
This scholarship was established by the Centre for Science in Society, Victoria University of Wellington (now the School of Science in Society), aimed at supporting students entering their first year of study, towards either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Communication, majoring in Science Communication.
Who is eligible?
- Applicants must be New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in their first year of undergraduate study at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Communication, majoring in Science Communication.
Selection criteria
This scholarship offer is conditional on the recipient gaining University Entrance and being fully enrolled in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Communication, majoring in Science Communication.
Applicants will be assessed on academic merit, their personal statement, and their character reference.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- A 300 - 500 word personal statement outlining your motivation for studying science communication.
- An uploaded academic transcript of Level 2 NCEA results (or the equivalent in another qualification).
- A letter of recommendation or a character reference - to be request via the online application.
Selection process
A shortlist of eligible applicants will be assessed by an internal panel consisting of nominees from the School of Science in Society, on the basis of the applicants' academic merit, character reference and personal statement. The successful candidate will be chosen by that same internal panel.
Additional information
The successful recipient of this scholarship will receive the value of this scholarship paid as stipend.
Regulations and conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
