Description

This scholarship is funded by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) and has been established to support students studying economics who have an interest in the Māori economy or issues affecting Māori.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants must be fully enrolled in a full-time programme with courses in Finance, Economics, Business or Commerce at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must be in their second, third or fourth year of study.
  • Applicants must be New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Selection criteria

  • Highest performing students in their year for economics and finance courses will have preference.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an interest in the Māori economy, issues affecting Māori and an interest in working in Māori economics in the future.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • A personal statement outlining how they meet the criteria for the scholarship, the potential impact the scholarship could have to their studies, and their aspirations after their studies.
  • A reference from an academic or community member who can endorse their interest in the Māori economy (to be requested via the online application).

Selection process

Selection will be made by the Head of the School of Economics and Finance and representatives from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.

Additional information

  • The Scholarship will be paid directly to the student as one lump sum or two annual instalments or monthly payments, OR paid to University accommodation, tuition fees only, tuition fees & levies.
  • The successful recipient is expected to write a letter of appreciation to the donor within one month of receiving the award.
  • The successful recipient may also receive an offer of mentorship from NZIER in Wellington, subject to business requirements, which will be arranged directly with NZIER.
  • The successful recipient is entitled to receive the scholarship for up to two years subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
