InPhySec Cyber Security Scholarships

History and purpose

These scholarships were established in 2019 by InPhySec a Fujitsu company to support two students with their studies in cyber security. These awards are intended to encourage and help build cyber security expertise within New Zealand.

The Scholarship is open to students studying Cyber Security Engineering or Software Engineering at Victoria University of Wellington. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Who is eligibility

  • These scholarships are open to students enrolled at 200 level or above in a BE (Hons) degree majoring in Cyber Security Engineering or Software Engineering at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.  Recipients will be based on academic merit, however preference may be given to female applicants, or applicants from minority groups, in particular students of Māori or Pasifika descent.

Selection Criteria

  • Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who will be able to obtain and keep a Security Clearance (See  https://protectivesecurity.govt.nz/personnel-security/national-security-clearances/getting-a-national-security-clearance/).
  • Applicants must be studying full time towards a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must be majoring in Cyber Security Engineering or Software Engineering.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed at least 80 points at 100 level toward the degree specified above.
  • Applicants must not be in receipt of a scholarship or another form of sponsorship from any other technology or information security company.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview. Previous applicants are able to re-apply in subsequent years.

Selection process

The selection panel will comprise the Head of School of Engineering and Computer Science, or their nominee, up to two appropriate members of academic staff, and two representatives of InPhySec.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards unless the recipient has received a scholarship from another technology or information security company.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. If successful, the recipient will be subject to a Ministry of Justice criminal record background check.
  7. Reference to the award and its recipient may be made in InPhySec media and other marketing collateral.
  8. The recipient will represent InPhySec and its values appropriately.
  9. The recipient may be required to speak a couple of times at events during the tenure of their award.
  10. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for the University and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  11. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
