The Judicial Afterlife: Judicial 'Retirement' in the UK

What do judges do after they retire; and what should they do? Dr Ben Yong (Durham) along with Dr Patrick O'Brien (Oxford Brookes) have carried out a 2-year project funded by the British Academy, examining what judges in the UK have done in retirement, 1950-2020. The results are startling: a majority of judges at the High Court and above now take on legal work of some kind; and the judicial retirement convention which once determined what retired judges could do is now largely ineffective.
