Debjani Mukherjee is pursuing a PhD in Film Studies at the University of Auckland. Her thesis aims to understand the centrality of the multiplex in contemporary Hindi popular cinema as it changes traditional cinema-going practices, engendering a new cinematic landscape that displays a crucial shift in themes, narrative structures and stylistic aspects.

She has two master’s degrees, the first in English Literature from Gauhati University and the second in Communication Studies from the University of Leeds. She also has a postgraduate diploma in Film Direction and Screenplay Writing from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, India—her graduate film was invited to participate in the competition section of the Mumbai International Film Festival.

She has been a part of the European Commission-funded new media collaborative research project NM2, working in the narrative design team for Interactive Village as a Research Associate in the School of Art and Design, University of Ulster, UK. In India, she has been a visiting faculty at Tezpur University, Assam and Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, besides running her own independent media production outfit, Red Earth Media, which produces creative and human-interest documentary films.
