Slips, trips, and falls

Slips, trips and falls are the most commonly reported incidents and accidents at the University.

Preventing slips, trips and falls

  • Take extra care in wet conditions, as hard surfaces can become slippery. Wear clothing and footwear appropriate to the weather.
  • Don’t rush. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to where you need to go.
  • Use handrails when walking up and down stairs.
  • Keep work areas tidy, keep equipment, tools and materials out of egress paths.
  • Use cordless tools where possible.
  • Equipment and materials must be secured if exposed to the wind.
  • Clean up spills, or if can’t do so right away, isolate the affected area.
  • Make sure there is adequate lighting for the work site.
  • If working in a slippery environment (in poor weather, near running water etc.) make sure additional controls are in place to mitigate the hazard.
