Future Visions for te Taiao Film Competition

The competition is part of wider research that looks at ways te Tiriti partners can govern together for sustainable environmental management.

The project is co-lead by Dr Maria Bargh (Te Arawa, Ngāti Kea, Ngāti Tuara, Ngāti Awa) and Dr Carwyn Jones (Ngāti Kahungunu).

SO7: Adaptive Policy and Governance as part of Bioheritage National Science Challenge looks to strengthen the agency of Māori communities, iwi, hapū and whānau as kaitiaki and as te Tiriti partners within resource management processes and systems.

The short film festival aims to explore key questions:

  • What does the kaitiaki role involve?
  • What values, methods and strategies are highlighted for environmental protection?
  • What aspirations are there for the future of te taiao? How could they be actualised?
  • What relationships or partnerships are significant for te taiao to flourish?
  • What is the connection between the health and well-being of te taiao and well-being of communities?
  • How can te Tiriti o Waitangi influence environmental management?

The competition asks entrants to imagine or envision the future of te taiao, including its protection and management. Dialogue generated by the films will be used to enrich the overall visions proposed by the SO7 research.

“Biodiversity continues to decline in Aotearoa. This suggests that current governance models and policies are not protecting species and their habitats, and in some cases are further contributing to their decline,” says Dr Maria Bargh—Project Co-lead (Te Arawa (Ngāti Kea Ngāti Tuara, Ngāti Awa)).

“Our research team is looking at how governance and policy needs to change to better protect the environment including by ensuring kaitiaki are a key part of decision-making and that governance is Tiriti-led.”

The competition will be open from 12pm on the 1st of October 2021 and films are to be submitted by 5pm on the 17th of October. It is open to all age groups and peoples.

The categories are:

  • Rangatahi (up to 11 years old),
  • Taiohi (12-18 years, Pakeke (Open age category),
  • and a category for Ngāti Kea and Ngāti Tuara hapū members.

Prizes include best entry in each category, best example of mātauranga Māori, and best Te Reo entry.
