Doctorate scholarships for Classics graduates

Timothy heads off to the University of Oxford to start his Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History, focusing on Roman politics, in September. “When I learned that I had received a Clarendon Scholarship to study at Oxford, I was surprised and nervous: I had never been hugely optimistic of my chances, and I am still wrestling with imposter syndrome.”

Timothy says the nerves are transforming into excitement. “I am excited at the opportunity to pursue my passion at the world’s best Classics department. I owe huge thanks to the staff of Victoria University’s Classics and Italian programmes. They set me on this course through their outstanding teaching and their passion for their disciplines.”

Theo is on his way to the University of Michigan in September, where he will study Classical Archaeology, with a focus on the Greek Bronze Age. He says he is very excited and honoured to have received the scholarship. “I wouldn’t have been able to do my doctoral study without it and now I am in the happy position of being paid to study what I love for the next six years.”

Theo is incredibly grateful to the Classics programme staff who set him on the path to success with their support and advice.

“Dr Judy Deuling, who supervised my Honours and Master’s theses, deserves special thanks, for encouraging and allowing me to pursue my research in unorthodox, if ultimately fruitful, directions.”

Both graduates earned Distinction for their Master’s thesis, written with the support of a Victoria University scholarship, and each was awarded full funding for his doctoral research.

Classics Programme Director Dr Simon Perris says their success continues a long tradition of Classics graduates from Victoria University winning funded places at top universities overseas. “It testifies both to the quality of the Classics programme and the strength of its international reputation.”
