Centre for Strategic Studies hosts Strategic Defence Policy Statement 2018 launch
The Minister of Defence Hon. Ron Mark launched the statement to a large audience in the Hunter Council Chamber, including the Secretary of Defence Helene Quilter, the Acting Chief of the Defence Force David Procter, as well as members of the diplomatic corps, Victoria University staff and students.
The Minister’s speech laid out the Government’s defence policy, with a particular emphasis on the growing challenges posed by climate change in the Pacific, and the role the Defence Force plays in ‘community and nation’ as well as in missions further afield.
In a lively question and answer session, the Minister addressed the new language in the statement about China, as well as the challenge of funding the replacement of military aircraft and ships that are rapidly approaching the end of their service lives.
CSS Director David Capie said, “It was great for the CSS to be able to host the launch of this important statement from the government. It underscores the role Victoria University plays as a civic university, engaging with stakeholders from across government and civil society.”
