The results from QS World University Rankings confirm that Victoria is in the top 1% of universities in the world for 14 subjects, and in the top 2% of universities overall. In the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject, FHSS is ranked 55th in the world for Arts and Humanities and 84th in social science.

There are more than 18,000 universities worldwide and the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject rank the top institutions.

FHSS and Faculty of Education Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jennifer Windsor says this is an outstanding result.

“We very much believe in the value of studying humanities and these subjects are proven to be up with the best internationally. We are able to offer our students fundamental insights and multiple perspectives about cultures, societies and languages—all particularly important in the contemporary world. That’s part of why the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Education, are very strong at Victoria.”

Two other subjects from the Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences are in the top 100 band—English Language and Literature and Performing Arts—providing further evidence of Victoria’s world-leading capability in this area.

History, Linguistics, Communication and Media Studies, Politics and International Studies and Sociology are ranked in the top 150 in the world.

“These are very positive subject results, which affirm Victoria’s standing as an internationally respected and globally ranked capital city university,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford.

“We are proud of our consistently strong results—results that are entirely dependent on the outstanding reputation of our academics and the high quality of our research.”
