FHSS researchers and alumni among Fulbright award recipients

Researchers and alumni from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were honoured by Fulbright New Zealand recently as it celebrated its recipients of Graduate and Scholars awards.

The Fulbright programme promotes international goodwill and mutual understanding between New Zealand and the United States through educational and cultural exchange. The awards enable talented New Zealand graduates and academics to undertake postgraduate study or research in the United States and for American researchers to study here.

Alexandra Sinclair who graduated in 2013 with a BA in Pacific Studies and International Relations and an LLB(Hons) received a Fulbright Science and Innovation Graduate Award to complete a Master of Laws degree specialising in intellectual property and civil and indigenous rights at Columbia Law School in New York City.

Louise Davidson-Schmich, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami, is undertaking research into New Zealand’s female Prime Ministers during her tenure at Victoria and teaching a class on Comparative Political Economy. Clare Jones, graduate from the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, is completing her collection of poetry at Victoria, specialising in the intersection between ecology and poetry.

“By giving people opportunities to study, research, teach or present their work in top institutions, our awards open doors for tomorrow’s leaders and thinkers,” Fulbright New Zealand Executive Director Penelope Borland says.

“For New Zealand, it is vital our future leaders have broad exposure to international thinking and trends, and bring their knowledge home to share. We are proud to welcome this year’s outstanding grantees into the global Fulbright network.”
