CMIC Talk 4 - Video Analysis and Animation Synthesis

Associate Professor Okabe of Shizuoka University discusses three research projects based on video analysis and animation synthesis.

Abstract: I am interested in user interfaces in general, especially for computer graphics. My research objective is to develop interactive techniques with which users can produce desired multimedia content quickly and easily. In this talk, I present three research projects based on video analysis and animation synthesis. The first project is "Fluid Volume Modeling from Sparse Multi-view Images by Appearance Transfer", which enables the user to model the natural-looking volume of fluids from sparse multi-view videos (e.g., only a single-view or a pair of front and side views). The second project is "Creating Fluid Animation from a Single Image using Video Database", which enables the user to animate a painting or photograph of a fluid scene: employing the database of fluid examples, the core algorithm in our method then automatically assigns fluid videos for each part of the target image. The third project is "Interactive Video Completion": we propose an efficient video completion technique, which enables the user to interactively draw a mask and immediately remove objects from the video.

Bio: Makoto Okabe received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, University of Tokyo. He worked on computer graphics and user interface design, advised by Dr. Takeo Igarashi.

He worked with Dr. Ivan Poupyrev at Sony Computer Science Laboratory as an intern from June 2003 to March 2006, and with Dr. Yasuyuki Matsushita at Microsoft Research Asia as an intern for three months from September 2004 and for two months from October 2006. He worked in the Computer Graphics Group of Max Planck Institut for Informatik as a postdoc from April 2008.

He joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Electro-Communications as an assistant professor in February 2010, and was a researcher of JST PRESTO from February 2010 to March 2013.

He joined the Department of Mathematical and Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering at Shizuoka University as an assistant professor in August 2016 and as an associate professor in September 2017. His current research interest is video analysis and animation synthesis.
