On 4 March, supported by the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington the Confucius Classroom at Te Kura Kaupapa Motuhake O Tawhiuau Ngati Manawa, an Iwi school located in the southeast of Rotorua, was inaugurated. There are 93 students from Year 1 to Year 13, 92 of whom are Maori. The school has had Chinese classes for two years and teachers hope that the opening of the Confucius Classroom will help students in their study of Chinese. All going well, in 2018 the students of Year 13 would be able to select Chinese as a subject in the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, which is the university entrance examination in New Zealand.
