Joint Meeting of the Confucius Institutes in Oceania: Brisbane, July 2016

On 10 July the 2016 Joint Meeting of Confucius Institutes in Oceania was jointly held by Hanban and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

More than 50 people participated in the meeting, including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Queensland Professor Peter Hoj, Chinese Consul-General in Brisbane Mr Chen Li, Tianjin University Administration Committee Vice Chair Professor Wang Yan, Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Australia Mr Xu Xiao, Hanban Deputy Director-General Mr Wang Yongli and Directors and Deputy Directors of the Confucius Institutes in Oceania. They shared experiences and discussed the importance of the partnerships between Chinese universities and local universities in promoting Chinese language and culture though the Confucius Institute. Mr Wang Yongli expressed his thanks to everyone for their support.

Four issues were presented for discussion: the five-year plan of the Confucius Institute, the development of local teaching resources, the management of Confucius Classrooms and Mandarin Language Assistants, and the cooperation between Confucius Institutes and local enterprises and social communities. These issues were significant for the further development of the Confucius Institute.

To date there are 506 Confucius Institutes and 1007 Confucius Classrooms globally, with 1.9 million registered students in 139 countries. There are 18 Confucius Institutes and 93 Confucius Classrooms in Oceania countries.
