Kong Jingyuan, Mandarin Language Assitant at the Confucius Institute, was invited at Te Aro School to give a Chinese music presentation to celebrate Race Relations Day. Jingyuan played the Pipa, a four-stringed Chinese music instrument. “It was wonderful to hear and see the Pipa so close. I have never seen one before.” said Kristin Holmes, teacher at Te Aro School.Kong Jingyuan is a graduate from Xiamen University and will be working at the Confucius Institute at VUW as a Mandarin Language Assistant. She will be offering assistance to the Chinese Language Department at VUW and the Chinese language and culture programmes of Wellington based schools. She has been playing the Pipa since she was 8 years old and was selected by Xiamen University to be part of the Confucius Institute musical tour to give performances in Nigerian and Liberian Universities in 2012.
