Background

Velichko Fetvadjiev (PhD, Tilburg University, The Netherlands; until 2014 publishing by the surname of Valchev) lectured in cross-cultural psychology in the Centre for Applied Cross-cultural Research at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand from 2015 to 2016. His interests are in the broad domains of personality, language, and values in cross-cultural context. His main research so far has addressed topics of personality structure, expression, assessment, and predictive validity across cultural groups. One common thread is the question, how adequate are the established Western models of personality, such as the Big Five, for a comprehensive representation of personality in non-Western contexts? His studies use a range of both qualitative and quantitative methods.

Areas of interest

Velichko’s current research projects address the following topics:

  • behaviour predictability and consistency across cultural groups
  • the underlying structure of observed behaviours across situations
  • language effects on personality perception and expression
  • self- and other-perspectives on personality
  • interpersonal relations in the family context
  • implicit motives
  • an integration of the domains of personality and values
