Snow and Our Changing Climate

Lauren Vargo on a new collaborative project with the University of Otago and NIWA seeks to improve the modelling of seasonal snow in our changing climate

How much snow is up there on the mountains of New Zealand? How much snow is going to be up there?

Dr Lauren Vargo (ARC Research Fellow) and Dr Todd Redpath (University of Otago) are investigating how snow is changing and what are the impacts to our climate. This new project funded by the Deep South National Science Challenges will use satellite data to better measure the snow in the Southern Alps, and then use that data to improve modeling snow accumulation.

'A key to understanding snow in the future is to understand how it is behaving now. We are trying to understand how the snow contributes to our water resources.' Todd said.

‘The modelling that we are doing will help us understand how much snow is in the Southern Alps today, and how much snow will be in the mountains in the future’ Lauren said.
