Greek Field Trip offers opportunity of a lifetime for Classics students

Twenty-three Classics students are currently soaking up archaeological sites and museums in Greece as part of the Classics programme’s biennial Greek Field Trip.

The Honours students and select third-year students, mostly from Victoria University but also from the University of Canterbury, are in Greece with Dr Diana Burton and Prof Jeff Tatum as part of CLAS 320/420.

Offered every other year, the course involves five intensive weeks at important archaeological sites and museums in Crete and mainland Greece, including Thessaloniki and the Peloponnese.

Academic staff deliver lectures on archaeological, art historical, and historical matters with students preparing on-site reports and sitting a comprehensive examination before leaving Greece. Before visiting the sites, students spend time undertaking research in the world-class library of the British School in Athens.

No other university in New Zealand offers a comparable opportunity for such in-depth study in Greece, and students routinely describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the best course they have ever taken.
