Clemency is a professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department at the University of Canterbury.

She researches the history of mathematics and science in ancient and medieval India, particularly the transmission of ideas from other scientifically active societies in the ancient world. Of the estimated 30 million manuscripts that exist today, roughly as high as ten per cent of these are scientific. Clemency works with primary sources in Sanskrit, which she edits, translates, and writes scientific commentaries.
