From Singapore to Victoria Law

Jason Chua Dong Wei chose Victoria University of Wellington for his exchange not only because of its strong reputation, but also for the ease with which he can use a Victoria law degree to practise law in his native Singapore.

Jason says the fact that he could go on exchange, finish his law degree, and be eligible to use his New Zealand study towards his application to the Singapore Bar meant Victoria was his first choice. “Many graduates of Victoria’s law school have gone on to accomplish significant things in the legal arena, and I think New Zealand is a great option for Singaporean students.”

Jason has really embraced the diverse opportunities available at Victoria, and says that not being afraid to get involved has helped make his experience special. He’s enjoyed learning about different cultures and impressing local students with his ability to speak multiple languages. On coming to study in a new country, Jason’s advice is simple: “Come with an open mind. Never be afraid to make mistakes, never be too shy to ask for help. Make friends with people, explore new places, spend every moment appreciating the diverse culture the country offers. More importantly, be humble and always have an inquisitive mind.”

Jason has definitely followed his own advice, having been involved with numerous activities organised by the Asian Law Students Association, as well as joining the Victoria Badminton Club. This has allowed him to mingle with students from different Faculties and disciplines. Jason credits this with ensuring his experience has been well rounded, and not simply spent inside the library. “This is extremely important as the initial years at law school can be daunting!”

He’s also been impressed by the quality of the teaching and the attitude of all the staff he has encountered. “In class, we can be debating serious legal issues. Outside class, professors are willing to spend time to see how we, as international students, are coping.”

When Jason returns to Singapore later this year he will be working for a law firm in their Litigation and Dispute Resolution department—part of the requirements for admission to the Bar in Singapore. He references Professor Petra Butler’s International Dispute Resolution course as being one of the highlights of his time at Victoria. “What I really liked about the course is that it meshes theory with practical aspects. Queen’s Counsel and other legal luminaries are often invited to speak to us, giving insight into what working in this field is actually like.”

Jason’s experience hasn’t just been about study. He’s also been impressed by both the beautiful nature and the vibrant nightlife of Wellington region. “Everyone’s so warm and welcoming that it’s been easy to settle in. There’s also plenty to explore—from the greenery of the hiking trails around Wellington, to the night life on Cuba Street. There’s something for everyone in this vibrant city.”
