James Mbinta

PhD in Health: Herpes Zoster: Epidemiology and Vaccine Effectiveness and Safety

Profile

James is a full-time doctoral candidate within the School of Health. His doctoral research examines the effectiveness and safety of the zoster vaccines. Herpes zoster (HZ) is characterised by a painful vesicular rash and in older people often leads to post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), and prolonged pain with a subsequent negative impact on quality of life and functional status. Vaccine efficacy and effectiveness against incident HZ has been demonstrated in clinical trials and observational studies. His objective is to describe the epidemiology of zoster and assess vaccine safety and effectiveness against incident HZ and PHN in adults 50 years and older.

A systematic review will be carried out to evaluate the international evidence on the effectiveness of zoster vaccines. National retrospective observational (2006 – 2018), cohort (2018 – 2020), and self-controlled case series (2018 – 2020) and supervised machine learning studies will be carried out using routinely available data from the Ministry of Health, New Zealand.

Information generated safety, effectiveness, and benefits of the zoster vaccine will be vital for informing policy makers, health practitioners and the public of the relative benefits of the vaccination programme and have potentially large societal benefits for NZ and the international scientific community.
