The New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre (NZCCRC) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Beijing this April. NZCCRC Chair Tony Browne and Director General of the International Cooperation Bureau at CASS, Dr Wang Lei renewed an existing agreement for a further 5 years. The purpose of the MOU is to establish closer ties and collaborative relations between both Centres and hopes to further strengthen the existing academic relationship.

This new MOU will enable the Centre and CASS to continue holding activities such as last year’s successfully co-hosted conference on the Belt and Road Initiative. This new arrangement provides scope for further events in both New Zealand and China and given that the NZCCRC’s is a national centre focusing on contemporary Chinese politics, society, and economics, such arrangements are beneficial for ongoing research and collaboration. CASS’s position as a leading government-affiliated think tank in China makes it ideally placed to work the NZCCRC in this capacity.
