INFO395/ELCM395, a final-year capstone course that requires students to think strategically about the use of IT in business, provided contestants for the Annual School of Information Management Case Competition.

This year's case was Fotolia North America, an Internet-based firm facing the challenge of developing a business model that will provide quick and sustainable growth in the microstock photography industry.

Twenty-four teams participated, writing and orally presenting a business case detailing their analysis of the case, their recommendations and ranking of alternative solutions, and their proposed action plan.

The top three teams presented their business case in front of a panel of judges from the local Wellington business community, this year composed of:

  • James Clarke, Senior Manager, Deloitte
  • Heath Tolley, Senior Consultant, Deloitte
  • Lynda Kamstra, Programme Manager, Government Technology Services, Department of Internal Affairs
  • Peter MacLeod, Managing Director, Mercury IT

The winning Team Synergy's recommended a mix of technological and organizational solutions that were well justified by the evidence and context of the case. The panel of judges was highly impressed by the team's cohesion and quick thinking, as well as the overall soundness of their business case.
