Students and staff from Wellington School of Business and Government’s School of Information Management shared their innovative and practical research at a special showcase evening in October.

The showcase aimed to connect students and staff with members of the IT industry to discuss their research and identify opportunities for partnership. Select students and staff held five-minute stand-ups discussing their work after which attendees had the opportunity to meet with both undergraduate and postgraduate students to learn more about their research projects.

A variety of research topics were discussed over the course of the evening ranging from autonomous systems to the threat that Airbnb poses to the physical and cultural security of a place.

Many of the research projects discussed had real-world implications, such as Master’s student Cameron Lai’s research into how the personalisation of search engines like Google can limit the information and perspectives people are exposed to—potentially hurting public discourse.

“Our students regularly produce pioneering research that can have a real impact on society,” says Head of the School of Information Management Dr Janet Toland. “Events such as the research showcase are great opportunities for our students to share their research with industry and build connections that will help them in their future careers.”
