Rare performance of David Farquhar’s Symphony No. 1

NZSM will launch its 2016 orchestra series on 14 April with a programme of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Fauré and Farquhar.

The NZSM Orchestra’s performance of David Farquhar’s Symphony No. 1 will be its first live performance since its premier in 1960.

NZSM Director Euan Murdoch says to be the first orchestra in over 50 years to perform David Farquhar’s Symphony No. 1 is a special privilege.

“It’s great to be launching our orchestra series for the year with such a unique piece on the programme and we hope the audience enjoy this rare treat too.”

NZSM Orchestra conductor Kenneth Young says Farquhar’s symphony is a very fine composition that he greatly admires.

“It covers a wide range of expression, from the searching nature of the first movement to the brilliance and wit of the second. I’m very excited to get the symphony back in the public arena, especially as David used to be a Professor of Music at Victoria University.”

David Farquhar was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to music in 2004, and passed away in Wellington in 2007.
