Victoria 1-2-3 a guarantee

A Victoria University of Wellington connection is guaranteed when the winner of the SOUNZ Contemporary Award is announced late September.

The three finalists of the music award all have links to Victoria: Ross Harris taught at the University for more than 30 years, Reuben Jelleyman is a current undergraduate student at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music, and Chris Watson is a PhD graduate.

The award celebrates excellence in contemporary composition, with the jury commenting that this year’s finalists “weren’t afraid of taking risks and exploring new territories”.

The selected works are:

Ross Harris: Piano Quintet, for two violins, viola, cello and piano

Reuben Jelleyman: Expanse, for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble

Chris Watson: sing songs self, a single movement piano concerto

Reuben is a first-time finalist and at 22 years of age is the youngest ever composer to be nominated for the award.

“I am particularly delighted to be a part of the awards this year, alongside two of my favourite composers. The history of finalists includes many, from heroes, friends, teachers and family; and so I'm daunted, and yet encouraged, amongst the best of company," says Reuben.

The award is part of the larger APRA Silver Scroll Awards ceremony to be held in Auckland on Thursday 17 September.
