Masters students interested in privacy law can apply for a scholarship to both assist their studies financially and give them an opportunity to work under the supervision one of the world’s leading privacy law experts, Associate Professor Nicole Moreham (pictured).Nicole Moreham

Recipients of the scholarships, supported by a Rutherford Discovery Award, will be based at the Victoria University of Wellington Faculty of Law. Masters Scholarships for LLM (Law of Privacy) are on offer for 2017 and 2018.

Dr Moreham first studied privacy law as a PhD student at Cambridge University in England and has since earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading scholars of privacy. She lectures and researches at Victoria University and her specialist interests cover the law and theory of privacy, breach of confidence, and the privacy torts.

Among her published works, in March 2016 Dr Moreham released The Law of Privacy and The Media (3ed) (OUP, 838 pp), which she edited with Sir Mark Warby, specialist English media High Court judge.

The scholarship provides a one-year tenure to give students the opportunity to complete a Masters by thesis on the law of privacy. It is open to New Zealand and international students (although the scholarship only covers domestic fees, or the equivalent).

The successful applicant will have a strong legal academic record and will need to have completed an undergraduate degree with academic distinction equivalent to New Zealand first class honours.

Possible topics for a thesis include:

  • Privacy rights for the deceased and their families;
  • The privacy implications of reality television;
  • Privacy and social media;
  • Development of common law privacy rights in New Zealand or abroad;
  • Legal responses to ‘revenge porn’;
  • How to fashion appropriate remedies for breaches of privacy;
  • Privacy in the context of search and seizure;
  • The right to be forgotten; or
  • Any other privacy topic which the candidate finds interesting.
