Abstract

The proposed research aims to provide a comprehensive description of the 21st-century genre of digital news postings available on Instagram by exploring the necessary textual and contextual components involved in genre construction, interpretation and exploitation. Employing Bhatia's (2017) critical genre analysis (CGA) framework, the current study focuses on Covid-19 news reporting on Instagram where I tease apart and make sense of the interdependent interaction and integration between text, multimodal features, professional practices, and interdiscursive elements that give rise to the relatively new and hybrid genre. The unique multidimensional and multi-perspective approach adopted in this study attempts to demystify and explicate how and why Instagram news reporting are constructed, interpreted and exploited by professional members of the field, thereby, providing in-depth insights into the professional world of social media journalism.
