About us

Learn about the vision and values of the Assisted Dying Research Network, based at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Our vision

We will provide a critical evidence base and work collaboratively to research the new assisted dying service focusing on safety, quality, and equitable access for eligible people.

About us

The Assisted Dying Research Network is an independent, multi-disciplinary group who are working together to ensure timely and high-quality assisted dying research is conducted in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Network are a productive, collaborative group who may hold differing views on assisted dying, and who are working towards the same goal: to strengthen the evidence base and inform decision-making about the End of Life Choice Act.

This includes: assessing who is choosing to make use of the law; whether access to assisted dying is equitable; if providers are well informed; if the safeguards are working as intended; and ensuring access is only granted to eligible people and vulnerable people are protected.

Our work is guided by Te Tiriti of Waitangi principles: tino rangatiratanga (Māori self-determination), equity, active protection, options, partnership; and the NZ Health Research Prioritisation Framework Attributes: why in NZ, mana tangata, excellence, impact and equity.

The network has been generously funded by the Health Research Council, Research Activation Grant and Science, Health, Engineering, Architecture and Design Innovation (SHEADI) Division, Faculty Research Establishment Grant.

Objectives

  • Develop a programme of assisted dying research
  • Build research capacity
  • Consult with tangata whenua and stakeholders to create a research agenda
  • Develop research applications to deliver that research agenda
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange across the network
  • Provide easily accessible information on the assisted dying service
  • Advocate for evidence-based long-term planning in public policy

Values

Our values are:

  • Manaakitanga—we show care, inclusion, respect, support, trust and kindness to each other. We are committed to the health and wellbeing of all people.
  • Ōritetanga—we commit to equity and we will ensure that there are no unintended consequences of the research, such as increasing health inequities in any way.
  • Whakapono—we have trust and faith in each other to work with integrity.
  • Kōkiri ngātahi—we connect and work together collectively towards a common purpose.
