2019 Professorial promotion

Congratulations to Associate Professor David O'Donnell (Theatre Programme) who has been promoted to Professor.

Associate Professor David O’Donnell is a leading New Zealand theatre director, with key contributions to Pasifika and Māori theatre; and he has directed many productions throughout New Zealand, Australia and Hawai’i. He also has an exceptional academic portfolio and is widely respected internationally as a preeminent theatre scholar. David’s co-authored book (Floating Islanders: Pasifika Theatre in Aotearoa 2017) received the 2018 prize for best book from the AustralasianAssociation for the Study of Drama and is regarded as a seminal work. David is an exemplary teacher and mentor and highly regarded as a post-graduate supervisor. He has received VUW Teaching Excellence Awards and played a critical role in establishing significant new degrees at the University. David’s leadership within the University is equally impressive, notably seen in his previous role as Head of School of English, Film, Theatre, and Media Studies.

In addition, he has provided critically important advice and support for the emerging Miramar Creative Centre. David’s career is marked by a commitment to collaboration, and he has demonstrated sustained hautūtanga / leadership and excellence across all the areas of activity required for promotion to professor. David’s reviewers confirmed his international standing as a scholar and leading theatre director, and the high quality of his academic and creative leadership.
