Earthshot Prizes are awarded by The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington is one of three organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand that is an official nominator for the awards.

We are accepting public proposals, for fantastic projects to put forward in the five Earthshot Prize categories:

  • protect and restore nature
  • clean our air
  • revive our oceans
  • build a waste-free world
  • fix our climate.

Five prizes will be given each year for 10 years, with the goal of finding new solutions that have a positive effect on environmental change and improve living standards globally, particularly for communities most at risk from climate change.

Prizes can be awarded to individuals, teams, or collaborations—scientists, activists, economists, community projects, leaders, government agencies, businesses, cities, and countries—anyone whose evidence-based solutions make a substantial contribution to achieving the Earthshot’s aims.

You can find out about the winners of the first Earthshot Prizes in 2021 here.

To assist our process for assessing project suggestions, we have partnered with KiwiNet to use its Auaha website to co-ordinate application submissions. If you have a project you’d like to submit, contact sustainability@vuw.ac.nz and the sustainability team will ensure you get a link to register so you can supply basic information about your project for the assessment process. Submissions are required by 5pm, 8 February 2022.
