Find out more about the latest Wai-te-ata Press Chinese heritage type projects.
Ya-Wen Ho, Publications Assistant at Wai-te-ata Press, is currently overseeing the restoration of our heritage type collection. First steps include putting the types in a scanning electron microscope to assess the metal composition and impact of corrosion, then developing a digital workflow to catalogue and provide condition reports for each of the characters. The types also need to be transferred to new type cases. No mean feat given the total collection weighs in at one tonne – now that’s heavy metal.
Once the types are restored, collaborative projects with Victoria University of Wellington students and the Chinese community will use the heritage printing types for small print runs. In addition, there will be opportunities for developing new digital fonts and exploring the world of the digital handmade.
