Conference proceedings

Landscapes and ecologies of urban and planning history

Keynote presentations

Kevin Prime – Ngati Hine and New Zealand Environment Court

The paper compares how Maori view particular landscapes with the views of Pakeha academics. Issues discussed in the presentation include identity, the Maori concept of Mauri and natural resource management.

Bill Gammage – Australian National University

Professor Gammage’s talk sketches how Aboriginal people used fire and no fire to manage land at the time Europeans arrived to settle Australia in 1788. The landscape was not natural in 1788, but made. It was maintained by a strict and universal Law, and by hard, constant work.

Jacky Bowring – Lincoln University

As Christchurch begins rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, the city’s past lingers in a range of ways. Dr. Bowring’s paper explores three key legacies from the 19th century, when the city of Christchurch was established by English settlers, and reflects on how these factors might influence the future.
