Tall building construction textbook reaching lofty heights
Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation senior lecturer Guy Marriage’s award-winning new textbook aims to be the go-to reference for any architect or architecture student involved in tall building projects.
Tall: the design and construction of high-rise architecture picked up one of the Most Promising New Textbook Awards from the American Textbook and Academic Authors Association.
Tall was written to be a guide on how to design a tall, multi-storey building and was originally aimed specifically at his third-year Construction class. However, along the way it has gained a much wider audience and is now proving to be a helpful guide for architects young and old, as well as students.
The book was launched at an event at the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation late last year. “2020 will be the first time that we are able to use it as a textbook to explain construction in class,” says Guy.
“I’m excited to get it to this stage and I hope the students will be too. It should help them considerably as it is filled with over one hundred simple black and white illustrations to depict what is being discussed.
“All the illustrations are brand new, with about half being drawn by myself and the other half being drawn by a brilliant young student scholar, Lauren Hayes. She draws in a clean clear style that the students can easily understand.”
The book is already doing well in New Zealand and has been picked up by other Schools of Architecture across the country, as well as being on sale worldwide.
“The one place where I see it being really useful is North America,” says Guy. “The US and Canada are the centre of tall building construction so this textbook would be just as useful to students there as it is here. Hopefully winning this award will help spread the word.”
