Victoria University of Wellington named as finalist in 2018 EECA Business Awards

EECA promotes energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the use of energy from renewable sources, and the Awards aim to highlight and celebrate best practice in energy management in New Zealand. The University is a finalist in the Public Sector category.

The University’s inclusion as a finalist acknowledges its efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. The University’s energy management programme, which commenced in 2007, has resulted in significant reductions in energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation and has involved numerous projects such as fine tuning heating and cooling plant operation, lighting upgrades, investing in solar hot water and photovoltaics, and PC power management for all 4,500 computers across the University.

Director, Sustainability, Andrew Wilks says being named as a finalist is a fitting recognition of the University’s longstanding commitment to sustainability. “As a leader in sustainability it is important that our academic expertise is supported by the demonstration of sustainable practice in our operations. Improving energy efficiency by 30 percent is great progress and this award nomination is a great way to highlight that”, he says.

The awards ceremony will be held in Auckland on 26 September and will be attended by business leaders and senior government officials. Find out more about the awards on the EECA website.
