Transition to university life

Transitioning from high school to life at university is full of new experiences. We have prepared some helpful tips to get your studies off to a great start.

Starting your studies on the right foot

From day one, we want you to feel at home. It is important that you are confident on where to go to access information and who to talk to if you have any questions.

Victoria University of Wellington is dedicated to helping you succeed by providing a wide range of student services and support from the moment you arrive on campus.

Attend orientation

The University's New Students’ Orientation is your opportunity to find your way around and meet new people, while picking up some vital academic preparation skills.

Get organised and set up for a great year of study, while throwing yourself into the fun activities and gigs all over campus.

There are dedicated orientation and enrolment programmes for international students in February and July.

Support when you arrive

There will be student ambassadors here to help you with your transition into university. Through the ambassadors, you will have the opportunity to meet other new students who are studying similar subjects to you, get a personalised tour to help you find your way around and engage in faculty-specific group activities and events.

Keep an eye out on what's happening during Orientation to find out what your student ambassadors have got organised for you.

Join a programme

Being a student is about much so much more than just books. It is about getting involved, meeting new people and trying out new things.

Sign up for one of our new student programmes Uni 101, WGTN Hall or our International buddy programme.

You can also sign up for one of our mentoring programmes, these pair you up with a student mentor who is normally studying in the same faculty as you. They can help you adjust and provide friendly support.

Looking after yourself

Develop strategies for success

Looking after your mind and body is an important part of study stamina as it helps avoid burn out. Sometimes, we need support and guidance from health professionals to help us through.

Victoria University of Wellington has professional counselling, health, physiotherapy and recreation services.

Maintaining your health and fitness

Participating in our recreation and fitness services is a fantastic way to make friends and enjoy activities and learn things outside of the lecture theatre.

Joining clubs can make your student experience richer and more rewarding. With over 100 clubs on campus, there’s sure to be one right for you.

Learn key study skills

Success at university requires independent academic study and skills you may not have used at secondary school.

Student Learning can help with transition to university life, one-to-one appointments, study workshops, peer assisted study sessions and specialist support for māori, pasifika, international and refugee students and students with disabilities.
