Pre-degree programme admissions
How admissions work for the Certificate in Foundation Studies and the Tohu Māoritanga.
If you do not have a University Entrance qualification, you can apply to study for a pre-degree programme.
Certificate in Foundation Studies
The Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Programme is taught by UP International College and offers successful students guaranteed entry into Victoria University of Wellington’s undergraduate programmes.
UP International College is conveniently located in the Wellington Railway Building in Central Wellington, a short walk from the University. The central location allows you easy access to public transport, accommodation, shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Tohu Māoritanga
The Tohu Māoritanga/Diploma in Māoritanga is designed to provide students with a foundation in Māori language, culture and society as well as supporting the development of academic study skills needed for tertiary study.
A University Entrance qualification is not required. The Tohu Māoritanga can be completed in one full year of academic study (February–November).
All students who apply for the Tohu Māoritanga will be required to provide a 500 word personal statement outlining their reasons for applying as well as a letter of support from a person who is able to comment on the applicant’s readiness to undertake university study.
When completed, students may be permitted to cross-credit up to 60 points towards a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at Victoria University of Wellington. Students must complete and pass the Tohu Māoritanga before enrolment in any other degree programme will be permitted.
Requirements
The Tohu Māoritanga programme is a one year diploma made up of the following courses.
- MAOR 001 Te Tu Marae—Marae Practice
- MAOR 002 Waiata Tawhito—Waiata Performance
- MAOR 003 Whakakokoi Matauranga—Academic Study Skills*
- MAOR 123 Te Iwi Maori me ana Tikanga/Māori Society and Culture
* The Head of School of Māori Studies may exempt from MAOR 003 a student with the required study skills.
