Thinking about suicide

Many people consider the possibility of suicide, some fleetingly and some more persistently. If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, or if you have tried to harm or kill yourself, here is some information that may help.

Why do people consider suicide?

When people go through very hard times, whether as a result of a recent crisis, or longer term struggles, most of the time we know that things will improve.

However, sometimes we feel so overwhelmed by the size or unexpectedness of our problems, or so exhausted from our attempts to cope, that suicide appears to be the only way to solve our problems and stop the pain we are feeling.

Most people who seriously consider suicide have depression. Depression can be treated—it’s important to remember that things can and will get better. Everyone needs and deserves help through hard times in life.

Enlisting the support of others helps us see other solutions, get treatment for problems, and reassures us that there are alternatives to the finality of ending our lives. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
