Improving student wellbeing

Find out about the University's plan to enhance student wellbeing and safety, how this was developed, and let us know what you think.

The University's community has diverse needs. We aim to cultivate a culture and environment that enables all students to thrive.

To improve student wellbeing, we are creating Ki te rā—Student Wellbeing Outcomes Framework.

Introducing Ki te rā—Student Wellbeing Outcomes Framework

We've put together a framework for student wellbeing called, Ki te rā—Student Wellbeing Outcomes Framework. Ki te rā builds on the outstanding work we already do to advance student wellbeing with key outcomes that will enhance student wellbeing, prevent poor wellbeing, and empower students to thrive while reaching their potential.

The framework includes four key parts and a related action plan:

  • Te Whakauru me te Whakarite | Embed and Prepare
  • Te Anganuitia | Address
  • Te Whakamana me te Whakaara Ake | Empower and Uplift
  • Te Mōhio, te Whakautu me te Ārahi | Recognise, Respond and Refer

How we developed the Framework

In 2022, we conducted some initial research and consultation about student wellbeing. We gathered information from surveys and advice from professional and academic staff wellbeing experts, student leadership and the wider student community, and external wellbeing experts.

In 2023, we drafted Ki te rā and conducted further consultation with students and staff, which showed strong support for the approach taken. We further refined the text with experts and negotiated actions with responsibility holders.

You can find more information about the initial research and consultation in the following report.

Next steps

We have now completed drafting Ki te rā and are seeking Te Hiwa and Council endorsement.

We look forward to launching Ki te rā in early 2024.
