Graduation week celebrations

Parade and celebration event

Graduates are invited to a graduation celebration event in Te Ngākau Civic Square on Tuesday 17 May, following a street parade through Wellington’s city centre.

Te tangi puoro and haka pōhiri will welcome to you into the square at the end of the parade, where speeches and entertainment will mark your achievements.

Whānau and friends will be able to cheer you on from anywhere along the parade route, and join you in Te Ngākau Civic Square.

The street parade is going ahead, please be at the Law School Government Buildings in academic dress, by 12.15pm. The parade will depart at 12.30 pm.

Photo opportunity

Graduates and their whānau are invited to meet with our Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor,  Acting Vice-Chancellor and Provost and have graduation photos taken in academic dress at Rutherford House, Pipitea Campus or Hunter Council Chamber, Kelburn Campus on Tuesday 17 May, Wednesday 18 May and Thursday 19 May.

The University’s Image Services team will be available to take professional photos at no cost to you. There will also be the opportunity to purchase graduation merchandise.

Other celebration events

Other events to celebrate graduation will be held (following any COVID-19 Protection Framework guidelines required at the time) between Sunday 15 May and Thursday 19 May. See below for details. More information will be added as event details are confirmed.

Doctorates’ celebration

The Vice-Provost (Research) will host a celebration for all doctorate graduates.

Doctoral citations

This year's doctoral citations are online due to the alternative format of the May 2022 graduations.

Graduates are invited to join with the Chancellor of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, the Acting Vice-Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori, to take photos in the Hunter Council Chamber on Friday 20 May  The University’s Image Services team will be there to take professional photos at no cost to you. After the photo session, you can mingle over kai with some of our Māori staff and other Māori graduands.

May 2022 Pasifika Graduation Celebration Postponed

As much as we would like to provide an occasion for you and your families to come together to celebrate your achievement, we have made the decision to postpone our Pasifika Graduation Celebration event, as health and safety is our priority.  We are working with our wider university community, particularly the faculties who are holding their own events, to ensure we have a Pasifika presence at these events. Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) Hon. Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban looks forward to seeing you there to celebrate a momentous occasion for you.

Collect your academic dress from Ground Floor, Murphy Building, Kelburn Parade:

  • Friday 13 May, 12 noon–5 pm
  • Saturday 14 May, 10 am–1 pm
  • Monday 16 May, 9 am–5 pm
  • Tuesday 17 May, 9 am–5 pm
  • Wednesday 18 May, 9 am–5 pm
  • Thursday 19 May, 9 am–5 pm

Return your academic dress by 5 pm, Friday 20 May. Return it to Ground Floor, Murphy Building, Kelburn Parade. Fees apply for late returns.



Qualification certificate/s will be made available for collection from Kelburn Campus from Wednesday 11 May.

If you have yet to receive your qualification certificate and are attending the photo opportunity, your certificate will be presented to you then.

If you are due to have your qualification granted, this will happen at the meeting of University Council on Monday 2 May. You will receive your digital certificate within a week of the meeting, your physical qualification certificate will be available from 11 May.
