Graduation cancelled due to COVID-19

The graduation ceremonies in November-December 2021 have been cancelled. Find out about transfer to May 2022 ceremonies, certificates, and academic dress hire.

We have made the difficult decision to cancel the November and December graduation ceremonies and parade. We understand that this will be disappointing for you, your whānau, friends and supporters who have been looking forward to graduation events.

The decision

Unfortunately, it is clear we will not be able to proceed as planned under either the government’s alert level settings or under the requirements of the new guidelines the government has signalled will soon be coming in.

Graduation is a time for you to celebrate your hard work and achievements, and we want to run the ceremonies in a way that is not compromised by restrictions, as well as ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community. We also want to make you do not miss out on graduation events despite this cancellation.

Transfer to May 2022

If you were due to attend graduation ceremonies in November-December 2021, you are invited to attend ceremonies in May 2022 (taking place the week of 16 May). You do not need to do anything at this stage and will be automatically transferred to these ceremonies. We will be in touch approximately 10 weeks before the May ceremonies to confirm your attendance.

Please email to let us know if you are not able to attend in May.

Graduation photos

We are organising an opportunity to take graduation photographs if you are not able to attend graduation ceremonies in May (or otherwise wish to take up this opportunity). We invite you and your whānau to meet with our Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor in the Hunter Council Chamber.

The University's Image Services will be available to take professional graduation photos of you in your academic dress in a safe way. There will be no cost for gown hire if you choose to attend this session. You will also be able to purchase graduation merchandise.

This opportunity to take graduation photographs will take place on Tuesday 30 November between 11 am and 2 pm, and between 3 pm and 5 pm.

Please register your interest to attend the photo session. Further information will be provided on registration.

Celebrating your achievements

Even though we’ve had to cancel our formal graduation ceremonies, we still encourage you to celebrate your achievements. Share them with us on social media—use #WellingtonUni and tag us in on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

For all graduates who were planning to attend the November-December ceremonies, your physical qualification certificate/s will be sent from Monday 6 December. The graduation office will be in touch to confirm your mailing address.

Digital certificates

If you have already had your qualification granted, a digital copy of your certificate would have been issued to My eQuals after the meeting of University Council through which your qualification was granted.

If you are still due to have your qualification granted, this will happen at the meeting of University Council on 6 December and you will receive your digital certificate within a week of the meeting.

Academic dress

If you have ordered your academic dress through Grad Gear they will automatically hold your hire so you can use it at a May ceremony next year.

Otherwise, you can arrange a refund by emailing
