Volunteer in the community

Gain experience by volunteering with a charity or not-for-profit organisation that interests you.

A great way to gain experience is to get involved in volunteer activities that complement your studies, interests and career goals. Through giving back to your local community, you can develop relevant practical skills as well as explore different areas and try something new.

There are hundreds of organisations in the Wellington region to choose from. Volunteer roles range from a few hours or a day, to something you do regularly each week.

Here are some of the areas you could volunteer in:

  • Animals
  • Arts and culture
  • Disability support
  • Environment
  • Governance
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Legal and advice
  • Psychology
  • Social services
  • Sustainability
  • Technology
  • Youth and education

Current students can see the full list of Wellington Plus Approved Activities on CareerHub.

Here are some quotes from our award recipients:

“I have greatly enjoyed taking part in the Wellington Plus Programme. It has given me valuable extracurricular skills that do not simply come from completing academic papers, and has given me both the motivation and opportunity to play a part in helping out my wider community, something that I have always wanted to do but never knew where to start."

"The Wellington Plus Programme facilitated my involvement in the wider community and it enabled me to accomplish things I did not know I was capable of. As a result I have gained confidence in my own ability and had many rewarding and humbling experiences.”
