Portrait of Daniel Raats

Daniel was involved in extracurricular activities that supported other students and helped him feel more connected as a student new to Wellington. He signed up to be a Class Representative regularly during his studies, acting as a liaison between his class mates and the lecturers. He created a sense of community in his classes and developed his communication and relationship building skills.

Volunteering as a PASS Leader for Student Learning, Daniel facilitated peer study groups and shared his knowledge of the subjects and study strategies. After that he took on the leadership role of PASS Mentor, managing a team of PASS Leaders and putting the theory from his management studies into practice. He further supported student’s academic success by volunteering at the Study Help Desk in the School of Biology.

Daniel enjoyed the opportunity to volunteer each year as a Student Ambassador during Orientation. He helped new students settle in to the University, provided advice and gave presentations. He also spoke to prospective students as a Student Representative in his hometown.

Daniel’s experiences with Wellington Plus opened doors to part-time work during his studies. He was hired as a NCEA Science tutor and later as a tutor for MGMT 101. Being able to immediately employ skills he learnt through his volunteering really enhanced his own motivation for learning.
Alongside his volunteering, Daniel attended workshops to focus on increasing his employability by working on his networking and C.V.

In his final year, Daniel was offered two graduate internships. He firmly believes that if it wasn’t for his Wellington Plus extracurricular activity, he wouldn’t have had these opportunities. He says that he fostered his own growth and experience through all of his peer support roles and became a better student as a result.

“I felt like I needed more than good grades to differentiate myself from other amazing students and I was interested in expanding my networks. Wellington Plus has been a large part of my student experience at University and opened many doors.”
