International Taekwondo

We practice the original style of ITF taekwon-do. We offer one of the most senior instructors in the country, low training fees, and a supportive environment.

We are the International Taekwon-do (ITKD) club at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. We practise International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF) taekwon-do, the original style of taekwon-do laid down by its founder General Choi Hong Hi in 1955.

Taekwon-do is a Korean martial art. In ITKD club, students will learn how to do:

  • fundamental movements: different punching and kicking techniques, of which there are up to over three thousand in number
  • patterns: a set routine of punching and kicking techniques (a martial arts type of dance)
  • board breaking: using punching and kicking techniques to break boards
  • sparring: free form or semi-free form fighting against an opponent
  • theory: the meaning and philosophy behind different techniques and aspects of taekwon-do.

As you become more proficient at all the above, you can advance in rank and attain different colour belts. Our instructor is Senior Master William Chan. As an 8th Dan Black Belt, he is one of New Zealand’s most senior taekwon-do instructors. He regularly umpires for the annual ITF World Championships. He is highly experienced and excellent with beginner students.

We train twice a week (Mondays 7 pm to 8.30 pm, Wednesdays 6.30 pm to 8 pm) at the University's Recreation Centre.

Come along to one of our training sessions! Beginners are very welcomed, as are those who have done taekwon-do or other martial arts before. Although small, we are a close knit, committed, and caring community.
